The Dry is Here

In Darwin there are only really two season, the wet and the dry. The wet is in the summer and generally it is hot and humid with the odd thunderstorm or storm that dumps huge amounts of rain. But if your area actually gets rained on is a different story.

But the dry has arrived which usually equates to 32c days and cooler nights. For the next week the low is predicted to be 26c. What does that mean, well no rain, nope none for 5-6 months. Blue cloudless skies, if there is a cloud in the sky we usually point it out. It is also the tourist season were all the Australians from the south go north to escape the cold, if they can afford to.

For us it means that all of the tadpoles are pretty much graduated we have about 10 left and within a week they will be all grown up. Will still have our frogs in the door locks giving us lots of laughs.

So here are some pictures we've taken since the last post.

Fish and chips night. This picture was taken when it was still in the wet season hence the umbrella.

Attacked by a frog. Ok more like sleep frog sticks to Paul. He was hiding under our patio umbrella so we had to relocate him a couple of times a week. He now resides in the door lock. See below.

Luna had some friends over from Germany and we took them to the Jumping crocodiles. Husbands were not on the menu this week. Whew.

The ladies got out of hand so we stuck them in the local jail.

A lot of weekends were rained out. Hmmm the rainy season may have had something to do with it. Every time I complained that we got rained out on the weekend people said "we need the rain" well yeah but not on my weekends. It has the whole work week to rain.

Frog above in his new house. We love this guy he is so funny. He only comes out every other night. No girls around and no more rain so he just sleeps and two days later pops out for a snack.

Notice the feet on this bird are like twigs this stops him from falling thru the water lilies.

Amazing Darwin sunsets will be fewer now there is no more clouds at night. We have to wait for the dry to really kick in and bush fires to start to give us some better sunsets.

Went to see the dog races. One race every 1/2 an hour. Each race 20-38 seconds long. Needless to say there was a lot of waiting around

Happy Lunar New Year 2013

Well it's Lunar New Year today and as usual I've decided not to write lots but just to say it with pictures. So here goes.

Went back for a quick visit to the Crocosaurus cove, this is a place in Darwin's downtown area that has Crocs in it. You would never know it when you walk by. Last year we went for the first time and because we live in the NT we can go back free for 1 year. So went back one last time.

We had a monsoon trough show up and we had rain and windy days for almost 2 weeks. The back yard was a mess. It is the only time during one of these troughs that you actually see white caps on the bay that we face. Normally it's as flat as glass. One weird thing about Darwin is even though we are on the ocean there isn't much of a breaze.

It was Australia Day in January and all I can say is boy some manufacturers a pretty patriotic. Here are some of the items that were on sale. We got the Cookies, Paper Towels, Tomato Sause and Kleenex.

They also had a UTE rally (pickup trucks), they pay $5 drive thru the main street for many kms and have huge flags on their UTEs. It lasted for more than 1/2 an hour. It's probably just a Darwin thing but still it's great to see people that love their country.

A friend of mine retired from work so we went to his retirement party the location is on Fanny Bay which is very beautiful.

We visited the Territory Wildlife Park again and this time we saw an owl in the bird show. She was beautiful and she put on quite a show for everyone.

A very big bird misnamed the Jabaru.

Albino snake, boy was this sucker heavy. I can see the attraction people have to snakes. Not that I'm getting one.

Enjoying Darwin life, not much else to do than sit outside under an umbrella in the hot weather reading a book. Actually not much indoor stuff gets done because from living in Canada we are so used to making the most of the good weather back home that when it's nice we go outside. I still haven't gotten over that feeling of having to be outside when the weather is nice.

It's a New Year

Well it's the new year and since I'm getting lazy in my old age I figured I'd just tell what's been going on for the last 2 months through pictures and videos.
So here goes

 This dude slithered thru the backyard one day. Sadly it was not Ralph. Gladly it was someone else. We had also seen 2 baby blue tongues on our travels around which is a good thing as their numbers are on the decline due to eating baby cane toads.

 

Kept going back to the Wharf for soup, fish and chips. Always remembering to bring a bag of cut up bread for the fish.

Went to Paul's Christmas Party.

Made a Christmas card.

Luna wore her BAT dress to her company Christmas party. Yup bought this back in July in Canada just for this day.

Drove to Katherine for 3 hours got there but due to the fact that it was low tourist season and Christmas week all tours were closed. Got a $75 ice cream and drove back. Ok that ice cream included the price of Petrol.

Tried a new way to keep the sugar ants off the bread. That's water in the lower cup. I guess ants don't swim.

Went to the Territory Wildlife Park. Definitely a recommend.

Saw this little guy a Tawney Frog Mouth. He's not an owl, looks like one but just isn't.

Celebrated new years outside. Boy was that hot.

Marveled at the power of the wet season.

Thought that this was the funnies sticker ever. Only in Australia would they use the word DODGY.

Tried on some cool Australia day glasses that also double as a bottle opener.

Found the only safe place to go in the water in Darwin is the big puddle that forms on the driveway during all the rain we are having this wet season.
